NY Post Still Attacking
Artists and Vendors
NY Post continues
vicious attack on Street Artists
Not 24 hours after I distributed the article below, the NY Post continued it's blatant hate campaign against street artists. Here's the headline and photo caption from the Monday 1/14/2002 Post:
NY Post 1/14/2002
By IKIMULISA SOCKWELL-MASON and FRANKIE EDOZIEN
POLICE OUT IN FORCE
TO POUNCE ON PEDDLERS
GET THE PICTURE? An officer radios for help to confiscate the wares of a picture peddler near Ground Zero yesterday. The vendor, who had been shooed away earlier, could not produce a license.
After eight years of covering the street artist issue the Post and the NYPD still don't get this basic fact straight:
STREET ARTISTS
DO NOT
NEED A LICENSE.
We won a Federal lawsuit on this matter in 1996. (Click Here for the ruling.)
Giuliani failed in his appeal to the U. S. Supreme Court in this case in 1997. It's been NYC law since 1996 that street artists do not need a license.
Since 1996 the NYPD has distributed numerous directives to all precincts to this effect [see operations order from the NYPD commissioner # 62: "...no enforcement is to be taken against street vendors of artwork for failure to produce a NYC Department of Consumer Affairs General Vending License."]
Is there a reason the City of NY, the NYPD and the NY Post can't get the law straight? After eight years of false arrests involving thousands of artists and art vendors must the war against street artists continue? Must we keep suing right through another administration just to get them to respect established First Amendment rights?

His essays and Op-Eds have appeared in hundreds of alternative publications as well as the Daily News, Penthouse, Africa Sun Times, Street News and The Shadow.
Lederman was falsely arrested 41 times for his anti-Giuliani activities and was never convicted of any of the charges. As a result of the arrests, he's won four Federal lawsuits and overturned three laws.
He is best known for having created hundreds of paintings of Mayor Giuliani as a Hitler like dictator which were carried in demonstrations throughout the eight years of the Giuliani administration. Images of his paintings and articles about his arrests and lawsuits have appeared on all of the major television networks hundreds of times as well as frequently appearing in the NY Times, Daily News, NY Post, Newsday, Newsweek, People, The Washington Post, LA Times and NY Magazine.
